If You Smell LPG Or Detect Leaking Gas
Gas leaks can occur from defective rubber tube, faulty regulator fitting and poor handling of gas appliances. Leaving the cooking unattended can cause the vessel to overflow, which in turn douses the burner and causes gas leak.
A smallest spark or flame can ignite gas fumes and cause an explosion. When a gas leak is suspected, extinguish all flames, incense sticks, etc. Close the LPG regulator and put the safety cap on the cylinder. Don’t light matches (or a lighter). Do not switch on/off any electrical switches or appliances. Open the doors and windows to ventilate your house. Call your gas supplier or the fire department. Isolate main electrical supply from the outside.
- Always store gas cylinders away from sunlight, heat, sparks and flame.
- Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
- Protect containers and the valves against physical damage.
- LP gas cylinders must be stored in an upright position. The pressure relief valve should be in the vapour space of the cylinder.
- Get the tubing checked by agents from the company which supplies you the gas cylinder once a year. They have professional equipment to detect leaks if any.
- Replace tubes regularly
If inhaled, take the person to fresh air. Let him/her rest in a position comfortable for breathing. If necessary, artificial respiration may be given. Oxygen is administered if there is difficulty in breathing.
- 1- Close the knob of the LPG appliance properly. Bring the regulator to "OFF" position
- 2- Open all doors and windows so that fresh air can enter the room/ kitchen
- 3- Do not switch "ON" or "OFF" any electrical appliance in the room / kitchen
- 4- Putt off all flames. Do not use any lighted matchbox or lighter to check for any LPG leakage.
- 5- Do not use electric fan to dispel LPG
- 6- If the smell of LPG still persists, remove the regulator from the cylinder and replace the safety cap on the valve. Move the cylinder without tilting to an open space away from naked flame or fire.
- 7- If you are not able to do so due to excessive leakage, evacuate the place and call the fire brigade.
- 8- In case of any assistance, Please contact your LPG supplier.

If there has been skin contact with the gas, immediately remove the contaminated clothing. Rinse the affected skin with plenty of water for more than 20 minutes. Seek medical help.
In case of eye contact rinse the eye and the eyelid immediately with plenty of water for more than 20 minutes. Remove contact lenses, if any. Continue rinsing. Seek medical help.
The fire from gas explosion may be extinguished with carbon dioxide (CO2), dry chemical powder or water spray. Using water jet and aiming water directly at point where gas is escaping is not recommended as the water may freeze. All personnel need to be evacuated to a safe area. Remove all flammable products from area of fire. Eliminate all sources of ignition if safe to do so.
